Homemade Granola Bars {Frugal Recipes}

by Mackenzie on April 25, 2013

My kids love snacks like granola bars but since we have started to not buy processed foods from the store it meant I had to come up with a homemade version for the kids to enjoy. What I love about homemade granola bars is that you can make all different kinds from this simple recipe below. You can substitute any of the ingredients for different varieties. In fact I made “Fiber Granola Bars” by using High Fiber cereal in place of the Puffed Wheat Cereal and diced dried plums instead of dried cranberries. So have fun and try all different variations!

  • 1 1/2 cups Puffed Wheat Cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups  Rice Crisp Cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups Old Fashion Oats (or Steel Cut Oats)
  • 1  cup Dried Cranberries (Plums, Raisins, etc)
  • 1 cup Walnuts (Almonds, Cashews, etc.)
  • 1 cup Chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 cup Honey
  • 1/2 cup Maple Syrup (not pictured)
  • High Fiber cereal (optional)

  1. Homemade-Granola-BarsIn a large bowl mix the cereal, oats, walnuts and cranberries. If you wish to have large chocolate chips in the granola bars you can add them at this time as well. Otherwise you can grind them into a powder to make the bars chocolately.
  2. In small saucepan heat the liquid items (honey, maple syrup and vanilla extract) on low so the honey becomes more liquified.
  3. Pour the hot liquid mix over the dried ingredients and using your hands or a spatula thoroughly mix the two so all the dried ingredients are coated.
  4. While still warm put the sticky mixture into a 9×9 or 9×13 pan. Pack down firmly as much as you can. Let cool or place in the refrigerator to set up before cutting.
