Homemade Playdough Recipe {Frugal Crafts}

by Jess on April 9, 2013

Homemade-Playdough-RecipeI know, another playdough recipe!  But, this one is a keeper!  I’ve tried a few different recipes for the homeade stuff that haven’t worked out so well in the past.  Too dry, too moist, too sticky.  However, this recipe is great and has been approved my my toughest critics, my kids!  Simple, thrifty and holds the color well, I think homemade playdough is a fun recipe to make with your little ones and gives you and instant activity for the next day as well!

Homemade-Playdough-RecipeIngredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon of oil or coconut oil (which we used)
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tarter (find this in your spice aisle at the grocery store)
  • food coloring

Directions:

  1. Measure out all your ingredients – great activity for elementary age children
  2. Mix together flour, salt and cream of tarter.  Pour into saucepan over medium heat
  3. Add water and oil and stir for 3-5 minutes – it will get sticky and will pull away from the sides
  4. Remove from heat and divide your dough, depending on how many colors you plan to make
  5. Add 6-8 drops of food coloring to your sections.  We made three different colors for our recipe, which worked well.

Homemade playdough is also a great party favor when placed into a bag with a cookie cutter and festive bow!
