Zaycon Foods – Chicken Review

by Mackenzie on November 23, 2011

We are all looking to save money where we can and know that buying in bulk at the grocery store gets you the best deal, especially on meat. Well, did you know that you can get large quantities of chicken, ground beef, bacon and more directly from the farmer for less then what you pay in the grocery store? Well you can with Zaycon Foods! Let me tell you a little about them…

Zaycon Foods is a privately owned company that uses the power of multiple buyers to get a better price on foods that you would pay more for in the store. This group “buying program” directly from the farmer helps keep the price per pound down because of the amount of chicken, beef, bacon and more that they buy. And since they only sell items by the case they are able to pass those savings to you. Plus they will only sell high quality, healthy food products that they themselves would eat such as chicken, beef, turkey, pork and fish.

I contacted Zaycon Foods about reviewing their product (happened to be a chicken sale “event”) and their process to see what it was like and to give my honest opinion. Well I can honestly say my experience was great! When I signed up at Zaycon Foods (I recommend doing this now since there is supposed to be a Beef/Bacon event coming up!) I was allowed to pick My Region which for me was Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I figured this would give me a wide range of possible times and I would be alerted by email for the next sale. Then you place your order and print your email confirmation and wait for the date of the sale.

On the day of the sale I packed a large cooler and made the trip to the destination which happened to be an hour away. Of my whole experience I would say this was the only negative. I think Zaycon Foods needs to have more locations near the Southeastern part of New Hampshire or Northeastern Massachusetts area so there is less driving to the sale event!

Each sale event is conducted from the back of a “truck”. Now I know you might be saying “that sounds kind of iffy to me” and honestly since this was my first time with Zaycon Foods I was thinking the same thing myself! And I was thinking when they said “truck” they meant a pick-up truck and how was I supposed to know which pick-up truck LOL. Well at exactly 10am on the day of the sale event at the address given a Ryder truck pulled up and two gentlemen in Zaycon Foods shirts started to pull the chicken boxes (40 pounds each) for the group of people waiting. Since they prefer you don’t get out of your car for the delivery the 3-4 cars in front of me lined up like they were ordering from a fast food restaurant! One Zaycon Foods employee checked your printed order with the name on their list while the other placed the box of chicken in the car. Since I had a cooler they even took the chicken out of the box and placed it in the cooler for me and then gave me the waterproof box in case I wanted to check the information or needed it. Then I said goodbye and that was it! The whole process took two or three minutes! Hence why they need another meetup location closer to me ;)

When I got home that is when the fun began! Since Zaycon Foods is buying in bulk directly from the farmer, the 40lbs of chicken comes divided into three or four plastic bags around 10-15 pounds per bag. Each boneless, skinless chicken breast comes butterflied meaning two attached together. The reason why Zaycon Foods gets the items cheaper then the grocery stores (other than buying directly from the farmer) is because there is prep-time required from the buyer…you. It is up to you to separate the butterflied chicken breasts and separate into family size freezer bags. And that is not for everyone…but if you share the 40lbs with another person or have a partner then it makes it easier since one person can be labeling the bags and holding them open while the other person is cutting and placing the chicken into the bags. Then there is less hand washing through the whole process!

Next I wanted to taste the chicken…since it was fresh and all! So we made our recipe for the weekly meal and used the fresh chicken from Zaycon Foods. It was delicious! I can’t wait to try their beef!

If you are interested in Zaycon Foods these are some of the products they offer in bulk:
