Since I recycled the ladybug costume my oldest “E” wore when she was a baby and had my youngest wear it last year I knew I would either recycle another costume or make one this year. As people often commented on how my youngest “C” looked like Pebbles I knew since LAST Halloween I wanted her to wear a Pebbles costume but I didn’t want to spend the $25 on a cheap costume that was thin and would require lost of layers for the cold New England Fall night.
That’s when I got my vision to make it myself. And so began the search for the materials I would need. First on my list…a pale pink sweatshirt in order to keep her warm (although I will layer with a plain white shirt). This took me to four stores until I could find the right color and have it be a solid pale pink sweatshirt…without any graphics or extras like zippers. Talk about a challenge!
Then I got black legging pants and a sheet of white foam and adhesive backed black felt. Now I was ready! And all for under $8 I was able to accomplish her costume. A lot better then $25!
Materials Needed:
- Pale Pink Sweatshirt
- Black Legging Pants
- Piece of White Foam
- Black Felt (adhesive backed or plain*)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- *Hot Glue Gun & sticks for felt
Instructions:
- Cut jagged edges along the bottom of the sweatshirt to create a “torn” look.
- Cut sleeves of sweatshirt about 1/3 of the way down from the shoulders. Again cut jagged edges to create a torn look.
- Cut a jagged edge at the wrist part of the now cut sleeve “extras”. This will be used as leggings.
Cut a jagged edge on the legging pants about a 1/3 of the way from the bottom…should be just below the knees or so on the child when completed.- Take white foam piece and sketch a faint bone shape with pencil. You will want to make the bone in proportion with the size of the child.
- Take the black felt and cut into thirds length-wise creating three long strips. Cut each strip into different sized squares. Cut each square into tow triangles and round all edges. This will be for the leopard part of the costume and can be random sizes.
- Peel adhesive backing off and attached to the sweatshirt in random patterns. Use a hot glue gun if there is not an adhesive backing or if the adhesive does not stick properly.
- Use a white elastic to “attach” to a ponytail on the child…or you can hot glue a barrette or thick elastic instead.
