Looking for a fun and easy project to do with the kids? Then try making your own crayons! I’ve been wanting to try this since seeing a picture on Pinterest so I Google’d around until I found what I was looking for. Plus the hearts are perfect for Valentine’s Day!
Directions:
- Take old, used crayons (or brand new) and score all with a razor to make peeling the paper easier. Remove all paper from all crayons. This will be the longest part of the process.
Place all crayons in a Ziploc bag to break with a hammer or simply snap with your hands or cut with a knife.- Preheat oven to 275°
- Place crayon bits into metal muffin tins, muffin cup liners or silicone trays and fill about 1/2 half or 3/4 for bigger crayons. If using silicone trays place them on top a cookie sheet to keep them from falling.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes
- Remove from oven and let cool. Once cool to the touch you can place them in the freezer to help the process further.
Once completely done, flip tray over and remove crayons.
Notes:
I rounded my crayons on the bottoms with a butter knife to smooth the rough edges. I also placed in cellophane bags and stapled closed. In addition I used my scrapbooking supplies to make cute Valentine’s Day tags for the top.
In order to make 26 heart-shaped crayons for my daughter’s Kindergarten class I needed about 120 whole crayons so if you are using bits and pieces you would need the equivalent. Also the thicker you want the crayons in the tray, the more you will need to melt down.
You can also try layering the crayons by separating all the reds/pinks, yellow/oranges, etc. and layer the crayons with one color at a time. You will need to completely cool the first layer(s) before adding more however it creates a very cool look!
Important Notice: Once you use the muffin trays for crayons you can not use them for food afterwards.
