Review: Fairy Tales Hair Care Products + Lice Prevention

by Mackenzie on September 26, 2012

Rosemary_RepelThe day that I found out I was pregnant with my daughter there was only one thing I feared when she got older. Lice. Now you may be thinking “There are so many other things to worry or fear about. Why lice?” For one…I’m a bit OCD so the thought of tiny little bugs creeps me out. And knowing how easily it is to get them and how hard it can be to get rid of them I feared the day when my daughters would go to school and possibly catch them. That’s why when I heard there was a product that repelled lice I was immediately drawn to trying it and wanted to write a review of their products.

About The Company
Fairy Tales Hair Care was created over 20 years ago in the Fairy Tales Salon in Hewlett, NY. For years, parents would ask the stylists what were these products that made their children’s hair so soft and manageable and in 1999 the Fairy Tales Hair Care line was launched nationally with great success! Parents and kids love these natural products loaded with organic herbs to cleanse, condition style and most importantly, help repel hair lice.

The Rosemary Repel® line is infused with organic herbs of rosemary, citronella, lavender, and tea tree oil – all fragrances which have been shown to help repel lice. Their products were independently tested and proven to be nearly 100% effective when used together and according to instructions. Fairy Tales Lice Good-Bye uses all natural yeast enzymes to dissolve nit “glue” and break down the skeletal system of a louse and nit (egg) – a much more effective treatment than products such as Rid or Nix.

headlice_pennyWhat You Didn’t Know About Lice
Head lice are small, wingless insects which feed on human blood to survive which is why you will not catch lice from a pet. Head lice are clear in color when hatched, and then quickly develop a reddish-brown color after feeding and are about the size of sesame seeds. Head lice are crawling insects and they cannot, hop, jump or fly. Lice are usually spread through head to head contact which is why preschool and elementary-age children, 3-11, and their families are infested most often. Girls get head lice more often than boys as they are most often to lean their heads in close contact. In the United States, African-Americans rarely get head lice and personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice. In fact the more clean your hair the more head lice like their host. Lice do not like dyed or treated hair or hair with hair products, such as hair spray. They want squeaky clean hair to live and breed in and hair that is washed daily. Head lice cannot live without a human host and a head louse will not survive for more than 24-36 hours off of its host. This is why early detection is important. When you discover lice you will need to wash all linens every day in order to fully get rid of the infestation.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Avoid head to head contact at school and home.
  • Do not share clothing, hats, scarves, sports uniforms and helmets, coats and hair accessories
  • Do not share combs and brushes or towels
  • Do not lie in beds, on couches or car seats that have recently been in contact with an infested person
  • Do not worry about furniture sprays, they are useless. Vacuuming the areas such as floors, carpets, bedrooms, and couches is the most sufficient way to rid your furniture of head lice.
  • Don’t forget to vacuum car seats!
  • Wash the bedding each morning in hot water. Dry on high heat for at least 20 minutes.
  • Store all stuffed animals, large comforters, etc. in a sealed plastic bag for 2 weeks.
  • Soak combs and brushes in Lysol or rubbing alcohol for at least 1 hour.

Rosemary-Repel-Leave-In-SprayMy Thoughts on Fairy Tales
I love this product. I really, really, really love this product. I started with the Leave-In Conditioning Spray which smells like Heaven to me. The organic oils of rosemary, citronella, tea tree, lemongrass, peppermint, and sage just blend to create this wonderful smell that should be bottled as perfume. Every morning I call my oldest into the bathroom and I ready her for school. First I spray her hairbrush and gently brush through her hair. Next I split her hair into a “double ponytail” with one on top and one near her neck. This makes it easier to keep her hair under control and I am able to spray more of the leave-in conditioner making sure to get all of her ponytail and hair. I also spray her shoulder and any jackets or backpacks she is using. Seriously the Leave-In Conditioner Spray is just awesome!

We also use the shampoo and regular conditioner as a double protection against lice and they too have the wonderful essential oils. When you use all the products together you have an almost 100% protection against lice and that makes this mom feel a little less fear.
